R.E.A.C.H. … What is it?
REACH stands for “Reach for Enrichment and Community Health.” REACH is an enrichment program that operates daily from 3:00-6:00PM. The REACH program provides opportunities for growth and enrichment in children in grades K-12. It enables youth to interact with adults and peers while learning in a safe, supportive environment. At REACH, children focus on and learn clear standards for behavior, healthy beliefs, opportunity to contribute to a pro-social peer group as well as skills needed for recreational activities. By developing a sense of self-worth, identifying healthy alternatives and creating bonds, children will be more equipped with the skills necessary to create resiliency.
The REACH program offers four main components: Enrichment Activities, Peer Tutoring Program, Mentoring Program, and Parent/Child Sessions. The parent/child interaction sessions address the risk factors of family management problems and early antisocial behavior. It provides opportunities for the children to participate in their own learning, language and self-control skills and provides reinforcement of new skills through sessions with their parents and/or family members. It also gives opportunities for the parents to participate in their child’s cognitive and social development. The REACH program assists children with homework and provides opportunities for music and art projects. There are many opportunities for peer tutors and teenage volunteerism.
